This dish of buckeyessits in the Garst farmhouse at Whiterock Conservancy, Coon Rapids, IA, where it is VERY windy. Autumn, it has arrived.

Ah, buckeyes. A favorite game as a youth was the buckeye fight. Each contestant has a buckeye on a shoestring. Alternate turns whacking the opponents buckeye with your buckeye, hoping to break it off the string.

A good buckeye could last through a dozen fights. Legendary buckeyes could reach twenty wins.

(Hint: Soaking the buckeye in vinegar was the equivalent of modern day steroids.)
